Acupuncture has been used in China for more than two thousand years, and increasingly in the West since the 1970s.
It is used to treat and reduce pain emanating from a wide range of common health problems, and can be combined with other physiotherapy treatments.
Some of the common issues acupuncture deals with include headaches and migraines, back and neck pain, lower back pain and chronic joint pain, among many others.
Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine, stainless steel needles into the skin. This stimulates the body to produce endorphins and Oxycontin, its own pain- and stress-relieving chemicals.
It may promote sleep by stimulating the release of melatonin in the body, and may encourage a sense of well-being by stimulating the release of serotonin.
It also stimulates nerve fibers to block out pain signals and helps to reduce the sensitivity of tender points in the body.
